TSSD and Young Innovative Health Careers Declare War to Smoking cigarette on Cigarette Boycott Day. / February 9, 2017
“I Want to Stop Smoking” event organized by TSSD, Marmara University Health Sciences, Fatih Sultan Mehmet Hospital and Young Innovative Health Clubs, was held in Marmara University Haydarpaşa settlement Ord. Prof. Dr. Reşat Koyner Hall, on the occasion of World Cigarette Boycott Day on 9 February, under the guidance of Assoc. Dr. Nuran Akyurt.
In the training seminar, member of the TSSD M. Ubeyd Korbey, Fatih Sultan Mehmet Education and Research Hospital Chest Disease Specialist Assoc. Dr. Hacer Kuzu made scientific presentations on “Smoking and Health in Youth”.
Screenings of short films based on interviews with university students and scientific data, which were prepared by Young Innovative Health Club was held. Doğan Tanyer, a Turkish music soloist, performed for the significance and importance of the day. Certificates of Participation and gifts from various associations and institutions were presented to young people inn the training seminar which was realized with the participation of nearly 500 people from state and foundation universities and public institutions. The event was closed by family photo shooting.
Quit Smoking Day Reception / February 9, 2016
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan hosted ‘February 9th Quit Smoking Day’ reception at the Presidential Complex. Minister of Health Mehmet Muezzinoglu, Turkish Anti-Smoking Association President Dr. Mustafa Aydin, first lady Emine Erdogan, over 250 citizens who quitted smoking and citizens who quitted smoking persuaded by President Erdogan were also present at the reception.
President Erdogan said the Ministry of Health is prepared to declare 2016 as ‘Fighting Against Tobacco’ year and added, “Today among us, we have brothers and sisters who have promised to quit smoking and were able to do so. I congratulate them for making the right decision and keeping their promise.”
Speaking at the reception, the Minister of Health Mehmet Muezzinoglu emphasized the importance of being the first and only country to apply M-POWER criteria of World Health Organization, although we were late to fight against tobacco compared to Western countries.
The Minister of Health Muezzinoglu said that fighting against tobacco is not limited to restrictions and penalties that they are getting ready to put many implementations that require an important amount of budget into life.
February 9th World Cigarette Boycott Day/ February 9, 2015
|Members of Istanbul Governance City Tobacco Control Board; Istanbul Department of Public Health, Istanbul Municipality, Turkish Green Crescent, and the Turkish Anti-Smoking Association have organized several events to raise awareness of the harmful effects of cigarette smoking and tobacco products.|
|The meeting took place at Sepetciler Kasrı where the Turkish Green Crescent’s center is located. Deputy director of Istanbul Department of Public Health, director of Tobacco and Addictive Substances, members of the City Tobacco Control Board and several NGOs joined the meeting during which it was emphasized that the main purpose of such gatherings is to inform cigarette addicts about the harmful effects of smoking and change people’s attitude towards smoking in a positive way.|
|February 9 World Cigarette Boycott Day Walk was organized by Istanbul Department of Public Health, Istanbul Municipality, Turkish Green Crescent and a few NGOs. The walk started from Taksim Tunnel to Galatasaray High School and accompanied by Istanbul City Marching Band. Participants also put up information stands in front of the high school and Eminonu- Kadikoy and Besiktas- Kadikoy ferry stations to raise awareness and give information about the fight against cigarette smoking. Posters were displayed on city’s billboards in support of the day.|

|Dr. Mustafa Aydın reminded the audience about February 9th World Cigarette Boycott Day and the risks of secondhand smoking. “Many chidren die because they were exposed to secondhand smoking. 25% of chidren are born with a disability because of that. Fifteen thousand out of hundred and ten thousand people die due to secondhand smoking. Each year $25 billion is spent on cigarettes. $15 billion of it is spent on cigarettes and $10 billion on diseases that were caused by cigarettes.”|

MANY VALUABLE ARTISTS AND ACADEMICIANS SHOWED GREAT SUPPORT ON THE 9 FEBRUARY WORLD SMOKING BOYCOTT
The harmful effects of the today’s one of the biggest addictions in the world that threatens the human health, Turkish Anti-Smoking Association organized a Boycott Day on 10 February 2011 at the Metrocity Shopping Center.
As one of the harmful President of the Turkish Anti Smoking Associaiton, Dr. Mustafa Aydin said in his opening speech that around 100,000 people are dying every year due to illness caused by smoking, which is the reason that it is very important to fight against it.
The President also said that the law that is now in effect helped greatly to a decrease in sales compared to previous year. He added that their work on the issue is increasing every day and they are following up the subject closely as the association.
The Chief of Balıklı Rum Hospital Foundation Addiction Rehabilitation Clinic, Doç. Dr. O. Ayhan Kalyoncu and psychologist Dr. Mahpeyker Koçgündüz talked about the harmful effects of smoking on our physical and mental health. Rıhtım Karaköy Lions Club Chairman Zeynep Arslan Gezgin mentioned the harms of smoking to human health and said that they are supporting the Turkish Anti Smoking Association’s efforts to protect the second hand smokers that are affected because of the smokers around us.

A press conference was held with the participation of artists, bureaucrats and well-known people from the business world on 9th February 2010 for the World Anti-Tobacco Day in the Titanic City Hotel Taksim, Istanbul.
Assistant Governor and Tobacco Control Chairman Ahmet Aydin, artist Burak Kut, producer of Best FM Cem Arslan, composer Sezen Cumhur Onal, psychologist Alanur Ozalp, the owner of Enbe music band and musician Behzat Gerceker, and the Chairman of Ulker Food Metin Yurdagul participated in the conference.
Ahmet Aydin, who is the Assistant Istanbul Governor and City Tobacco Control Chairman said that it is not possible to withdraw/rescind the law of the ban of smoking in indoor areas and also he wanted citizens to inform the association about any violation of the law.
Dr. Mustafa Aydin, the President of the Turkish Anti-Smoking Association (TSSD), stated that the association highly contributed to the law of the restriction of smoking in indoor areas and also added that 110.000 people die of smoking and also 15 billion dollars is spent every year for tobacco products.
President of the Turkish Anti-Smoking Association, Dr. Mustafa Aydin also said that 400 billion is spent to fighting smoking. On the other hand, 600 billion dollars is spent for treating the illnesses caused by smoking. Saying that they lowered the appeal of smoking, he reminded the audience that there were some packets of cigarettes customized for the owner’s brand and it was seen as a kind of prestige product.
Artist Burak Kut said that although he smoked in the past, he quit smoking, trying to be a good example for everyone. He also added that with his latest album, he started a campaign called ‘do not smoke, listen to the music’ and he said that he wants to expand the campaign and reach larger audiences.
Musician Behzat Gerçeker said that education is very important in fighting against smoking and families’ responsibilities are crucial to prevent smoking.
Composer Sezen Cumhur Onal said that we need health in order to live in a peaceful way. He also said that there is a parellel relation between smoking and sorrow but smoking does not stop sorrow, instead it increases the sorrow.
Metin Yurdagül, who is the Chairman of Ulker company and a Member of the Board of Trustees of Istanbul Aydin Univesity said that his brother died of smoking and so he gives special importance to this subject, he also said that he has not allowed indoor smoking at his companies for many years.

A press conference was held with the participation of artists, bureaucrats and well-known people from the Turkish business world on 9th February 2009 for World Anti-Tobacco Day in Nişantaşı City Shopping Center.
Sisli Mayor Mustafa Sarıgul, Sisli District Governor Mehmet Koklu, Professor Dr. Bulent Tutluoglu, Artist Didem Taslan and Artist Selcuk Alagoz participated in the conference.
President of Turkish Anti-Smoking Association, (TSSD) Dr. Mustafa Aydin said that all Turkish people should fight smoking as we fought during the War of Independance, and he added that TASA have been fighting against smoking for the last ten years.
President of Turkish Anti-Smoking Association, Dr. Mustafa Aydin also said that 400 billion is spent for as part of the battle against smoking. On the other hand, 600 billion dollars are spent for treatment of the illnesses caused by smoking and also 50 % of forest fires in Istanbul are caused by smoking, 25% of babies whose parents are smokers, are born handicapped.
President Dr. Aydin said that the law of restriction of smoking in indoor areas has widely been accepted by people despite advertisement campaigns and added that smoking is the source of all problems of addiction.
The President Dr. Aydin said that cigarette producer companies purchase a few minutes of movie screen time to show the leading actors smoking and that kind of advertisement has a great effect on audiences. Besides that, there are also cigar shaped chocolates being produced. He added that artists should pay attention not to be a part of these kinds of advertisement campaigns.

TSSD President Dr. Mustafa Aydin, Artist Adnan Senses, Ex National Footballer Tanju Colak, Nezihe Timur, who is the chairman of the Executive Board and the Member of Directors Banu Noyan participated in the event.
Dr. Aydin also said that 50 million people died in World War II, but since then 130 million people have died of smoking. He pointed out the fact that weapons producers and cigarette procuders are the same companies and he expressed that even during this global crisis cigarette companies’ made profits. The President claimed that some tourism agents are using the pictures of men wearing fezes and smoking water pipes and this country doesn’t deserve any negative, unhealthy promotion like this. The President also said that 22 ton stubs of cigarettes are collected every year in Turkey and unfortunately, one stub of cigarette will not disintegrate for at least five years.

Activities were organized in Taksim Square on February 9th, related to World Anti-Smoking Day. As a part of these activities; a day before, on February 8th, a press conference was held in The Marmara Hotel Taksim Ball Room.
In our activity, scientists, artists, and athletes came together. Tanju Colak, former Minister of Health Bulent Akarcali, Environmentalist Prof. Dr. Orhan Kural, Memorial Hospital Heart Surgery Department Manager Prof. Dr.Bingür Sönmez, participated .
In this meeting, Prof. Dr. Bingür Sönmez’s presentation on cigarettes drew the attention of most of the audience. TV channels also informed people about the dangers of smoking.
