Sıcak Eller Association and the Turkish Anti-Smoking Association organized a seminar titled “Drug Addiction and Bonzai” at Şişli Cultural Center.
President of the Sıcak Eller Association Beyhun Aydin discussed bonzai and other addictive substances which were immensely threatening the youth lately and drew attention to the seriousness of the fight against drug addiction.
The seminar began with a concert by Ekrem Ataer Choir and a cocktail party. President of the Sıcak Eller Association and a member of the board of the Turkish Anti-Smoking Association Beyhun Aydin said at the opening speech, “we organized this seminar in order to protect our youth from bonzai and drug addiction that is especially widespread lately. We would like you to help us explain the young people about the harmful effects of bonzai and other drugs and keep an eye on them. If we do not fight with drug abuse we may pay a heavy price on our young people. Today, there will be speakers who are experts in their fields. They will give you valuable information on substance abuse and bonzai.”
The seminar was moderated by the chairwoman of the Department of Accounting and Financial Management at Istanbul Aydin University Dr. Gulumser Ünkaya. Participants included; psychiatrist Prof. Dr. Ilhan Yargıç at Istanbul University Faculty of Medicine, author and an addiction counselor Zafer Ercan, journalist and TV producer Tayfun Talipoğlu.
During the seminar it was emphasized that the use of addictive substances increases with each passing day. The speakers addressed the participants by saying “give any information you hear today to your friends and people around you. Make it your responsibility. To save a man is to save the world. I wish you a smoke-free and substance-free life.”
The Real Face Of Bonzai / August 14, 2014
The opening speech was given by the president of the Turkish Anti-Smoking Association and Kucukcekmece City Council Director Dr. Mustafa Aydın.
Kucukcekmece City Council Director Dr. Mustafa Aydin gave a speech at the seminar held at Sefakoy Culture and Arts Center. “Drug addiction has become a very big problem in our district and this situation has got us worried. The important thing is to help those who fell into those traps and help the others not to make the same mistake, and we can also do that by sharing the information we obtain in seminars such as this one with our youth like a messenger.”
An expert on the subject at the Narcotics Branch Recep Soylemez says, “any type of drug that addicts our youth leads them to a long problematic life. And unfortunately drug abuse doesn’t get the attention it deserves in our community. Everyone assumes that their child wouldn’t use drugs and cannot comprehend the real dimensions of the issue. However drug addiction is like a fire, we cannot guarantee that it won’t suck our child in as well. Youngsters who use drugs, since they aren’t well informed on the subject just say “one time won’t do any harm” and then find themselves in this trap. Unfortunately those who use drugs, once they open that door they soon realize it isn’t very easy to close that door. Because addiction is a spider web and is like an unbreakable chain, it won’t let you go once it’s got a grip on you.” Soylemez says that the rush of trying to satisfy the addiction just pushes the individual to crime. Soylemez adds: “This crime starts from the family and then visits other areas. Families have to be very watchful over their children who use social media. About 3000 youngsters have gotten addicted to drugs via Facebook and Twitter.”
The Probation Law has been just on paper
Vice president of the Crime and Criminal Court Assistant Professor Dr. Sinan Bayindir  who is in charge of the convicts for drug abuse said, “the 58th article of our Constitution states the obligations of the government to the individual who fell into the ‘drug trap’. However we have to say that Turkey’s bleeding wound is the probation law. It has been left as an application that has just been left on paper and the much needed personnel has been left meager. Now it looks like the government is starting to take the drug problem a little more seriously. Most people do not realize that some of the things they share on social media constitute crime. We have to realize that the things we post online are the information that will be looked at and shared when something problematic arises. And for this reason we have to be careful about what we write and share.”
Istanbul Aydin University Dean of the Faculty of Law Enver Bozkurt had a few things to add, “drug use and abuse is an international problem. Legal supervision isn’t enough by itself. The most important weapon against this problem is education. We have to educate the youth very well. Drugs are usually sold by terrorist organizations and a large portion of their wealth is earned in this way. Drug users should keep in mind that every cent spent on drugs helps the terrorists.”
The Turkish Anti-Smoking Association And Kucukcekmece City Council Have Declared War On Drugs / June 17, 2014
The fact that drug use has grown and spread from day to day and the age of use has dropped to 14 led to the meeting of Kucukcekmece City Council on the topic of narcotics.
The meeting was held in the Kucukcekmece wedding palace. The meeting’s topic was the serious growing rate of drug use in the district. War was declared on drugs by the President of the City Council Dr. Mustafa Aydin. Important steps were taken against drug use in the meeting and its attendees; Governor Harun Kaya, Mayor Temel Karadeniz, Vice-Mayor Sibel Gullucayir, District National Education President Cemal Yilmaz, District Police Chief Deputy, AK Party Women’s Branch President Filiz Aksut Aktas, CHP Women’s Branch President Gunay Oz, Narcotics Branch experts and civil society organizations.
“Our homework is Kucukcekmece”
District governor Harun Kaya stated that they met with the governorship to help stop the use of drugs and that they will be employing vehicles to combat selling of drugs, “this would be a great chance for those who would like to get rid of their bad habits such as smoking. Kaya: “Many educational studies will be conducted in the field in order to combat the issue one on one. We will be closely observing the subject. Our homework is Kucukcekmece.”
“We have to stop being a pleasure society”
“Whoever plants wind will get a storm” was the first words Kucukcekmece Mayor Temel Karadeniz, said in his speech. “We planted wind but we resent to see a storm.” Karadeniz blamed cigarette use as the first step to drug use. “It is not possible to keep a 13-14 year-old away from using drugs just by saying it is bad for them. Families, teachers, and as a society, us, the elders, have to set an example for them. As a municipality we are ready to do whatever it takes to solve this problem. We have to stop being a pleasure society.”
“We will clean our Kucukcekmece together”
Kucukcekmece City Council director Dr. Mustafa Aydin said, “we will take care of the streets together. We will clean our Kucukcekmece together.” With these words Dr. Aydin said that the war against drugs will gain speed with every second.
“The best solution is to never start”
Spreading through the “wrong crowds” and causing a chronic brain disease because of its highly addictive nature, drugs continue to kill young people every day. And with this being the case in Kucukcekmece, works on stopping the spread of drugs has been gaining speed every second. The fact that families cannot recognize it most of the time, the rehabilitation phase becomes very hard and at times very late. Narcotics Police Erhan Yalcinkaya told the council, “treatment is possible but if the person doesn’t want to be treated it is impossible for the patient to be treated by warnings. The best solution is to never start.”
AYBUDER attracted attention
The meeting of Governor Harun Kaya and president of the Ayik Yasamda Bulusalim Association Tufan Kocak, ended with a partnership on the war on drugs after the program. An ex-addict, Kocak, rehabilitates young addicts and helps them socialize back into society at the association he started established.

2nd International Anti-Smoking Conference ‘Tobacco: A Black Hole In The Economy’/ February 26, 2014
2nd International Anti-Smoking Conference titled ‘Tobacco: A Black Hole in the Economy’ took place at Istanbul Aydın University Florya campus on February 26, 2014. The former minister of Health and Tourism and the legislator of the smoking ban law, Bulent Akarcalı moderated the conference. World Health Organization (WHO) Dr. Toker Ergüder, TAPDK specialist Mustafa Seydiogullari,  founder of X-Cons Haninge Dervis Dennis Aksay and Terra Project photographer Rocco Rorandelli participated in the conference.
President of the Turkish Anti-Smoking Association Dr. Mustafa Aydın expressed that tobacco use has been a big problem in terms of health and economics. He then pointed out the financial and social harms of smoking by saying, ‘around 5 million people in the world, and 115,000 people in our country are dying due to smoking related illnesses. Our country is spending 21 billion dollars on smoking related problems and 10 billion to health problems associated with smoking. This means that 32 billion dollars are going up in smoke.’
Dr. Aydın also reminded that 50 percent of all fires are related to smoking and the companies are targeting mostly children.
He contined, “Our society consumes 15 million packages every year. This makes 76,1 packages per person a year. The market in our country comes up to 15 billion Turkish Lira a year. Along with the cost of fires and healthcare expenditures, the total cost of smoking is around 40 billion Turkish Lira. This clearly shows that smoking is one of the biggest problems in today’s world. Turkey is 7th in the world in cigarette consumption with 115,000 tons a year.’
The host of the conference, Istanbul Aydın University’s Rector Prof. Dr. Yadigar İzmirli said that the ongoing fight against smoking over the years is quiet remarkable however not enough. She also expressed that the bans on smoking in closed areas and outdoor advertisement have been effective in decreasing the number of smokers.
“Cigarette is a sneaky form of death”
The moderator of the conference, former minister of health and the legislator of the smoking ban law, Bulent Akarcalı said that there are 3 main aspects in tobacco use in the world. “The cartels has been infused in every system of the society. Our main objective should be to prevent smoking initiation. We are talking about a black hole that was created by cigarette. There is the billion dollar financial side as well as the social side to this hole. There were cigarette ads everywhere. There used to be a time when people used to smoke in hospitals.
Those times are long gone but the rates of which cigarette smoking dropped are not satisfactory. Cigarette is a sneaky form of death. People kill themselves spending their own money.’
Terra Project photographer Rocco Rorandelli said that if you ask someone the reason why he smokes he’ll tell you that it is a personal choice and he thinks that walking around smoking is his choice and it won’t bother anyone. I thought about the impacts of secondhand smoking and the idea of informed consumer. As you know more than 50 countries grow tobacco. Italy is the biggest tobacco producer in Europe…Tobacco farmers don’t have stable economic conditions. I am very surprised at child labor in tobacco industry. The minute a child picks up a moist tobacco leave that child will be exposed to 40 cigarette worth of poison. We are talking about nicotine infusion to blood….There is a huge market in China for tobacco production. 30% of the cigarette smokers live in China. If you attend a wedding in China the host will offer a candy to a woman and cigarette to a man.
X-cons founder and chairman Derviş Dennis Aksay said that smoking is widespread in Sweden as well that authorities are trying to prevent the young people from smoking initiation and have them quit.
TAPDK specialist Mustafa Seydioğulları said, ” TAPDK was established in 2002 pursuant to Law 4207. At that time Turkey was a land of tobacco. Until the 70’s, tobacco, cotton, and nuts made up the top 3 exports. Tobacco had 20% share in this. Then we lost our production mass. The tobacco export was reduced from 610 tons to 80 tons by the year 1988. Then we started importing. And this is the reason why tobacco creates a black hole in our economy.
World Health Organization-WHO- Turkey representative Dr. Toker Ergüder said in his presentation,  “5,5 million people die in the world every year due to smoking. WHO started to take serious steps against smoking by the early 90’s. We came to realize that countries cannot fight against smoking all by themselves. WHO decided to bring countries together in order to fight. In 2003, the Tobacco Control Aggreement was signed and put into effect.’
