Op. Dr. Hüsamettin Olgun, an Ear, Nose, Throat specialist, said that smoking may be the cause of many health problems such as tinnitus and deafness, and that if the situation is not taken seriously, great health problems may occur.
Otorhinolaryngology Specialist Op. Dr. Hüsamettin Olgun said that Research shows that smokers are 7 times more likely to experience tinnitus and deafness than nonsmokers and added: “Studies conducted on this subject over the last 50 years revealed that smoking is an important cause of tinnitus and deafness as well as the negative effects of smoking on the whole body. Especially when we consider that the cigarette addiction has been reduced to very early ages, it can be understood how important the issue is.”
Op. Dr. Hüsamettin Olgun, who stated that cigarettes have many harmful substances and continued:
“Carbon monoxide, formaldehyde, ammonia, arsenic, hydrogen cyanide and nicotine are only a few of them. In particular, nicotine causes the nerve endings in the brain to be destroyed, impairing the transmission rate. In addition, the damage to the vessels and tissues done by asphyxiation also has a negative impact on the function of the organs. These substances also damage the Eustachian tube, the middle ear mucosa and the inner ear. All body cells and DNA will be damaged as it adversely affects circulation and oxygen uptake. Damage to the ear nerves and inner ear occurs. Symptoms such as tinnitus, deafness and dizziness are also seen.
