Prof. Dr. Aydın: “Protecting our youth and children from the intervention of the tobacco industry is our priority.”

President of the Turkey Fight Against Smoking Association (TSSD) Prof. Dr. Mustafa Aydın made a statement on May 31, World No Tobacco Day. Prof. Dr. Aydın emphasized that protecting young people and children from the harmful effects of the tobacco industry is a primary objective.

In his statement, Prof. Dr. Aydın noted that the tobacco industry targets youth and children. He highlighted that the increasing prevalence of smoking among young people poses serious health risks and stressed the importance of preventing this.

“Collaboration from All Sectors of Society is Necessary”

Prof. Dr. Aydın expressed that the TSSD has been fighting against the tobacco industry’s marketing and promotional strategies aimed at youth for years. He stated, “Our primary goal should be to protect our children and young people from the tobacco industry’s interventions. In this regard, there needs to be strict monitoring and prevention of cigarette advertising and sales among youth.” He underscored the need for cooperation from all sectors of society to reduce smoking among young people and create a smoke-free society, highlighting the importance of joint efforts between the government and non-governmental organizations in tobacco control.

“Smoking is a Serious Public Health Issue”

Prof. Dr. Aydın addressed the destructive effects of tobacco products on human health, pointing out that tobacco use leads to millions of deaths worldwide each year. He stated, “It is known that tobacco use, particularly when started at a young age, can lead to long-term health issues such as lung cancer, heart disease, chronic respiratory diseases, and many other serious health problems. The tobacco industry targeting youth with different marketing strategies is a concerning situation that constitutes a serious public health issue.”

“Sales and Advertisements Must Be Strictly Monitored”

Emphasizing that the TSSD conducts awareness campaigns to reduce tobacco use among young people, Prof. Dr. Aydın highlighted the importance of legal regulations in effectively combating tobacco and stated that every sector of society has significant responsibilities in this fight. He remarked, “Strict monitoring of advertising and sales of tobacco products is critical to preventing young people from accessing these products.” Prof. Dr. Aydın also emphasized that fighting tobacco is not just an individual responsibility but a societal duty, urging everyone to actively participate in this struggle for a healthy future.

“Legal Regulations Should Be Implemented Without Delay”

Referring to the UK’s recent proposal to ban access to cigarettes for those born after January 1, 2009, which was brought to the agenda to protect children and young people from the harmful effects of the tobacco industry, Prof. Dr. Aydın stated, “The ban on cigarette sales for young people turning 15 this year is extremely important. In our country, laws should be enacted regarding the sale and marketing of tobacco products and electronic cigarettes, and inspections should be intensified. Otherwise, our children and young people, who are our future, are at great risk,” emphasizing the necessity of legal regulations.

In conclusion, Prof. Dr. Aydın said:

“World No Tobacco Day is an important opportunity to raise awareness about the harms of tobacco use and to take steps toward a tobacco-free future. I call on all of society to be sensitive to this issue and to support our goal of a smoke-free world for a healthy life. We will continue to fight until the last molecule of cigarette is eradicated.”
